In a cyclic compound the chain of atoms bends round and joins its own ends to form a ring, as in cyclohexane or benzene. Open-chain compounds are called acyclic.

Dans un composé cyclique, la chaîne d'atomes se referme sur elle-même pour former un cycle, comme dans le cyclohexane ou le benzène. Les composés à chaîne ouverte sont dits acycliques.
