-ess

female (agent)

French · -esse (from Greek -issa)

French -esse (from Greek -issa) makes a female form of a noun: actor becomes actress, host becomes hostess, lion becomes lioness. Many modern writers now prefer one neutral word, such as "actor" for everyone.

Memory trick

ESS sounds like "SHE": add ess and the word becomes she.
